ASP Isotopes inks deal to supply key isotope for potential cancer treatment options
Isotope separation technologies company ASP Isotopes, which is a planning a secondary listing on the JSE later this year, and medical isotope production company Isotopia Molecular Imaging have entered into a strategic agreement to secure the supply of Gadolinium-160, a precursor isotope for producing terbium-161 (Tb-161), an emerging medical isotope in targeted radiotherapeutics.
Nasdaq-listed ASP has isotope enrichment facilities in Pretoria, South Africa.
The partnership between ASP and Isotopia is aimed at addressing supply challenges for Gd-160, enabling Isotopia to advance Tb-161-based therapies for prostate cancer, neuroendocrine tumours and other malignancies.
Under the agreement, ASP will leverage its proprietary quantum enrichment technology to provide Isotopia with enriched Gd-160, a stable isotope required for the manufacture of Tb-161.
The collaboration aims to combine ASP’s work in large-scale isotope enrichment with Isotopia’s capabilities in commercial-scale medical isotope production.
“By supplying Gd-160, we are eliminating a major bottleneck in the development of Tb-161 therapies. Our investment in enrichment technology positions us to support the radiopharmaceutical industry's growing demand for stable isotopes.
“This partnership accelerates the path to clinical adoption of Tb-161, which could redefine cancer treatment paradigms,” says ASP CEO Paul Mann.
ASP last month also announced plans to acquire all shares in JSE-listed gas and energy company Renergen and create a strategic materials company with vertical and horizontal business integration.
The proposed merger is expected to combine ASP’s silicon-28 enrichment capabilities with Renergen's helium reserves to address critical supply vulnerabilities. Both companies supply the medical, nuclear and semiconductor industries.
